Harris and Selwyn Facades - Goodman Theater
The restored Harris Facade as part of the Goodman Theater Complex
This is the theater named "Michael Todd" on the previous page. The theater had been renovated by Todd as a venue for both movies and live performances.
The restored Selwyn Facade as part of the Goodman Theater Complex
The Selwyn Theater (Todd's Cinestage) is all but invisible in the 1958 photo on the previous page, except for the banners on the marquee advertising the current movie as "Gigi".
The marquees are gone, the doors no longer open, but the facades of the Harris and Selwyn Theaters have been restored to their original luster. The original buildings behind the facade are gone, replaced with more modern spaces that provide everything from rehearsal space to classrooms, as well as two theater auditoriums. There actually is a theater space behind the Selwyn facade, giving the Goodman a very flexible arena for productions ranging from experimental to traditional. The larger theater in the Goodman complex is located behind the new structure just to the left of the Harris. You will note that adjacent to the Selwyn Theater are "El" tracks passing right by the old auditorium. Yes, you could hear them from inside. The new theaters are cushioned and soundproofed, a great advantage to the original structures.
