Henrici's was one of the oldest and finest restaurants in Chicago, Located on Randolph Street, it was right in the heart of the Theater district. They billed themselves as "Chicago's Premiere Restaurant". The menu cover pictured on the left is from New Year's Eve, 1959. Founded in 1868, the restaurant was celebrating its 91st year when this menu was current. What's on the menu? You might want to start with a coctail. Henrici's giant Martinis and Manhattans would cost you 75 cents. You could get a Stinger for $.85. Add a glass of wine with your meal for Forty cents. "Tonight's Featured Dinner" is Swiss Steak from Prime Beef, rich onion sauce. That comes with a cup of soup DeJour, Cosomme, or Tomato Juice, plus a Mixed Garden Salad or Head Lettuce. Its rounded off with Henrici's famous Dumbbell, Vienna, or Rye Rolls. All of this for $2.65. And those were the days of ten percent tips. Would you prefer a steak? The most expensive item on the menu is the "Diamond Jim Cut", which was one pound of Prime Sirloin Steak. That would set you back $5.50. Of course, if you were to spend that kind of money, you would expect it to include potatoes, mixed garden salad (with their special dressing), rolls and butter. Which, of course, it did. Or how about something from their selection of fresh fish? Broiled Fresh Whitefish, Maitre d'Hotel with a Bordure of rich mashed potatoes and Garden Salad, all for $2.65. And that was served on a Plank of Fragrant Hickory. Don't forget to get your parking ticked stamped. The courtesy rate is $0.35. |
